Wuhou Ci in Chengdu
This is the temple of Zhuge Liang, the celebrated scholar and strategist of the Three Kingdoms Period. It is another historical site in Chengdu. Zhuge Liang (181-234 AD) was the prime minister of the State of Shu and in the minds of the Chinese people, he was very wise. The temple was built in304 AD during the Western Jin Dynasty. Early in the Ming Dynasty towards the end of the 14th century, this temple was merged with one dedicated to Liu Bei, a King of Shu. In1672 during the Qing Dynasty, the temple was rebuilt. There are two pavilions, one dedicated to Liu Bei and the other to Zhuge Liang. Flanking the main building are two galleries where28 sculptures of high ranking officials and generals of the Shu State are enshrined. Also on display are relics including a bronze drum known as "the Zhuge drum. "There are also more than40 stone tablets with inscriptions eulogizing the exploits of Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei carved in various dynasties. One of them is known as "the tablet of three excellences" because the inscription was done by the famous scholar Pei Du, the calligraphy by the famous calligrapher Liu Gongzhuo and the carving by the famous sculptor LuJian in the Tang Dynasty. In the compound there is also the tomb of LiuBei which is said to have been there for more than 1, 700 years.
