Western Xia Mausoleum

It is located at the base of Helan Mountains, 25 kilometers southwest of Yinchuan. The mausoleum is rather crude and of interest primarily to people interested in history. In treeless surroundings, it has a stark kind of primitive beauty. The founder of the Western Xia Kingdom built over 70tombs, most as decoys.

The remains of nine imperial tombs can be visited. Archaeologists believe that octagonal glazed-tile pagodas once stood by each tomb. For atmosphere, tourists can visit at night when the tombs are illuminated and accompanied by ancient music. The tomb of Li Yuanhao the dynasty's founder can be entered.
