Qiandao Lake consists of 1, 078 different sized small islands. It is located in Chun'an county, about 150km west of Hangzhou city and 140km southeast of Mt. Huangshan. Covering an area of 570 square kilometers, Qiandao Lake is one of the first-class national scenic spots and is the largest national forest park at present.
Qiandao Lake was formed in 1959 as a result of the construction of Xin'an Jiang Hydroelectric Power Station, which resulted in a large area of land and mountains being submerged by water. All of the mountains over 108 meters in height since become the islands in the lake.
Qiandao Lake is Known for its verdant mountains, crystal clear water, exotic caves and strange stones. With 81% of the area covered in forests, Qiandao Lake is a pure lake with clean and fresh air. The average depth of the water here is more than one hundred feet and the water visibility is twenty two to twenty nine feet. Nongfu Spring Water a famous mineral water brand, is drawn and distilled from Qiandao Lake. As national first-class water, it is so pure that it can be drunk directly.
Two of the most beautiful attractions of Qiandao Lake are Dragon Hill and the stone Forest. Dragon Hill is located at the center of Qiandao Lake. The Hairui Temple was built here by the Chun'an people to commemorate Hairui, a famous official of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), who once served as head of this county.
The Stone Forest is located at the town of Stone Forest of Chun'an county and is made up of three Parts Xishan, Turquoise and Hawksbill. Covering an area of 20 square kilometers, it is called "the first stone forest in Huadong Area". With strange stones, cliffs, caves and an ancient path, it is characterized by an otherworldliness that is hard to find anywhere else.
The serene landscape above the water's surface belies the historicalwonders hidden within its blue depths. Submerged beneath the water rests a unique archaeological treasure, the 1,800-year-old remains of an ancient Chinese city can be found in the mysterious underwater world of the lake. It is called Atlantis of the east. Archeologists believe that the city was submerged by water during an earthquake. The city walls and architecture which have remained preserved under the water for the last fifty years are some of the most substantial sunken artifacts in the world.
