The National Museum of China is located on the east side of Tian'anmen Square. It is the largest comprehensive museum in China. The museum's rich collections narrate the history created by the ancestors of the Chinese people over the course of five thousand years.
The National Museum of China was established in 2003 on the twin foundations of the former China History Museum and the former China Revolutionary Museum.
From March of 2 00 7 until June of 2010, the National Museum of China has undertaking renovation and expansion. When finished, the total area of the buildings will be over 192, 000 square meters, making this the largest museum in the world. Installation equipment, hardware, and capacities are second to none in the world. The Museum will hold collections totaling over one million objects ; there will be over forty exhibition halls. The permanent exhibitions, titled "Ancient China" and "The Road to Resurgence," will also have more than a dozen special exhibition halls devoted to them as well as international conference facilities.
Once the new National Museum of China is opened to the public, the concept of "museum" and the study of museum sciences will find a whole new expression in China. The level of modernization in the new museum is quite high and expresses the principle that takes "the person as the main focus."
Visitors will be able to take what they themselves want to derive from the exhibits, and choose what to view according to their own needs. At the same time, the museum will also provide visitors with various services and places to rest, including a television hall, a study and lecture hall, a theater, a library and materials center, restaurants, programs on transmission of non-physical or nonmaterial culture, and so on.
