Mogao Cave 419
Mogao Cave No.419 was constructed in Sui Dynasty (581-618AD). The large niche in west wall in cave 419 has five sculptures : a central Buddha in paryankabandha gesture, two bhiksus and two Bodhisattvas. The central image seated on a square seat has a flat usnisa and plump body, with two shoulders covered in his patched robe. The bhiksu on right side is Kasyapa , who has protruding eyebrows and deep eye sockets, with a bowl in hand. The one on left side is Ananda,
who looks very smart with a smooth forehead and young appearance. They and the images of bhiksus on the inner walls of the niche formed the ten great disciples of Sakyamuni.
The upper narrow spaces to the south and north sides out of the west niche represents the illustration of the debate between Manjusri and Vimalakirti. On the flat ceiling outside the niche is the illustration of Sutra of Meditation on Maitreya Bodhisattva's Rebirth on High, and on the gabled ceiling * in the front are narrative paintings of the Sudana jataka, the Sattva jataka and Parables from the Lotus Sutra illustration.
