Mogao Cave 159
Mogao Cave 159 was constructed during Middle Tang (781-848AD). This is a small cave with a square main hall in shape and a truncated pyramidal ceiling similar to cave 194 in both architectural form, size and dimensions of sculptures. The tent-like niche in the west wall has a seven-figure group. The illustration of Manjusri and Samantabhadra are painted on two sides outside west niche. Manjusri on the north side is seated on a lion with a S-shaped ornament in hands. A dark-skinned attendant (kunlunnu) holds a plate, and another kunlunnu drives the lion in the front. Beside Manjusri are the convoying Bodhisattvas and lokapalas. Below the lion are musicians playing flute and clappers. It looks just like a leisurely outing scene. The east wall and sidewalls are covered with various sutra illustrations.
