Labrang Monastery is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, that is also called Yellow Hat Sect due to their yellow hats.
Labrang is located in Xiahe County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, in the traditional Tibetan area of Amdo. Labrang Monastery is home to the largest number of monks outside of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It takes about four hours to Xiahe by car from the provincial capital Lanzhou.
In the early part of the 20th century, Labrang was by far the largest and most influential monastery in Amdo. It is located on the Daxia River, a tributary of the Yellow River. The monastery was founded in 1709 by the first Jamyang Shêpa, Ngawang Tsondru. It is Tibetan Buddhism's most important monastery town outside the Tibet. In the early 20th century, it housed several thousand monks.
Labrang Monastery is a Tibetan architectural layout, built form, mostly Tibetan, Han and Tibetan and Chinese palace-style and mixed-type three.
Labrang Monastery is well-known for its education achievements. There are six academies in the Labrang Monastery including Exoteric Buddhism Academy, Esoteric Buddhism Academy I and Buddhism Academy II, Xi Jingang Academy, Shilun Jingang Academy and the Medical Academy.
The English-speaking lama will guide the English-speaking visitors to visit the buildings at 10.15 am, 3.15pm every day.
