Built in 537 AD, during the Liang Dynasty (502-557 AD), Liurong Temple, or Six-Banyan Temple in English, 六榕寺 in Chinese, was variously known as Baozhuangyan Temple, Longevity Temple and Temple of Pure Wisdom. When the great man of letters Su Dongpo of the Song Dynasty came here in 1099, he admired the six banyan trees on its grounds and wrote the two characters Liu Rong (Six Banyans) as an inscription for the temple. Hence the name of the temple. It has the Hall of the Sixth Patriarch, the Burong (Banyan-Replanting)Pavilion and the Hall of Bodhisattva Guanyin. Its Flower Pagoda, originally named Sarira Stupa, was first built in the Liang Dynasty. The present structure, built in 1086, towers 57. 6meters. It has nine storeys on the outside and seventeen on the inside. It is called the Flower Pagoda because of its beautiful and splendid appearance.
