Jingbo Lake
Jingbo Lake, located 110 km from Mudanjiang City, southeast of Heilongjiang, is the largest avalanche lake in China with an altitude of 350 meters above sea level. As a narrow lake on high mountains, the Jingbo Lake was formed ten thousand years ago when lavas from volcano eruptions blocked the way of the Mudan River.
The lake is well known for its peace and quiet and the volcanic geography that is great for trekking in and over. The Chinese of Jingbo are fond of quoting the phrase that this lake is the "West Lake of the north", a reference to the famous Hangzhou scenic spot, and it is for this natural beauty that the lake and its surrounds are popular.
Diaoshuilou Waterfall, which resembles the Niagara Waterfall in North America, is located at the northern end of Jingbo Lake. It is more than 40 meters wide and has a vertical fall of 12 meters. It rushes down with a height of 25 meters, forming a spectacular scene. Spring flowers, summer waterfalls, autumn leaves and winter snows have produced 8 scenic spots around the lake. In the rainy season, the width extends to more than 200 meters.
Besides the breathtaking scenery, Jingbo Lake is also rich in cultural assets. The capital of the ancient Bohai Kingdom, a local regime established by the Mohe ethnic group during the Tang Dynasty (618-960), is located in the present Bohai Town, just 20 kilometers to the north of the lake.
