Giant Panda Breeding Research Base

Chengdu is famous for the Giant Panda Base that is situated in the northeast of the city.
As China’s National Treasure, the giant panda is one of the rarest animals in the world. Giant pandas are cute and lovely so that everyone loves to see them. However, the total number is estimated to be 1,500, including those living in the wild, 80% of which are in Sichuan Province. Giant Panda Breeding Research Base was founded in the north suburbs of Chengdu, which is the only one of its kind in the world that's located in a metropolitan area. In operation since 1990 the research station and breeding ground for both Giant and Red Pandas was first opened to the public in 1995. The aim of the Base is to promote their numbers and eventually expand the site from the current 36 hectares to a more adequate 230 hectares in the near future. Actually it worked perfectly to breed more pandas already. The visitors can always see the baby pandas in the Base. There is also a comprehensive museum and video on the panda’s history, breeding and eating habits in English.
Travelers are suggested to visit the Base in the morning because it is feeding time for the pandas, normally pandas will stay in the houses in the afternoon, particularly in Sumer to escape the heat.
The entrance fee for the Base is CNY58 per person. Open hours: 7:30 am to 6 pm.
