Caotang Temple

Caotang Temple, meaning "Straw Hut Temple" in Chinese, is in Huxian County, which is about thirty kilometers southwest of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China.
The early history of the temple can date back to 401AD. The quiet temple was for the noted Kumarajiva (Chinese 鳩摩羅什; 344-413), one of the "Three Great Translators" of Sanskrit into Chinese, who once lived here after he left Wuwei from Hexi Corridor in Gansu Province,, and oversaw a translation workshop employing over 3,000 monks on the grounds.
There is a Kumarajiva Pagoda in the temple, which was built for keeping the remains of Kumarajiva who translated into Chinese many Buddhist classics sutras. The pagoda is said to be a sarira stupa for burying his remains. The pagoda was built in the Tang Dynasty.
The pagoda has a special structure. The pagodas main body is carved from jade of eight colours -- white, greenish, black, bright yellow, reddish, light blue, purple and dark gray -- hence it is also known as the Eight-Color Jade Pagoda.
