In 2000, Longmen Grottoes was inscribed on the list of world heritage by UNESCO.
Longmen means Dragon Gate literately, Because the river looks like a huge natural gate. Located on both banks of the Yi River, 13 kilometers south of Luoyang City, Longmeng Caves is well-known for its rich Buddhism culture. There are more than 1300 caves where there are Buddha statues, sculpture, frescos and niche for Buddha. The history here can be traced back to 1500 years ago, during Northern Wei Dynasty when emperor Xiaowen moved his capital from Datong to Luoyang (A.D.493). It lasted more than 400 years.
Though lots of sculptures are damaged in the long past time, we still can view the elegant Buddha and Bodhisattva statue that created mostly in Tang Dynasty. The biggest statue is 17.14m, and the smallest one is only 2cm.
The biggest Buddha Statue here is at the Fengxian Temple which was constructed in Tang dynasty (672AD) with the height of 17.14 m.
The travelers can visit the Caves in the evening from 7pm to 10pm, which is highly recommended to view the lights on the statues and rivers.
