Yichang City is located in the west of Hubei Province and on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, just at the mouth of the Three Gorges. Because of its strategically important location it is known as the "throat of Sichuan and Hubei Provinces and the gateway to southwest China."
Now Yichang is the third largest city in Hubei Province. It is 21,084 square kilometers. Its population is 4. 15million and it administrates six counties and four urban districts.
It has a long history, Yichang was called "Yiling" in ancient times which means "here mountains become gradual and the water flows mildly." Yichang is located at the joint of ancient Chu culture and Ba culture, so its cultural features are very distinctive, the Tujia people's folk customs are very rich. Yichang has been a famous and interesting place for notable persons and tourists to visit since ancient times.
Yichang is also known as the "Hydroelectric City" at home and abroad. The largest provincial, national and world hydropower stations are all in Yichang. The largest power station of Hubei-Geheyan Power Station on the Qingjiang River has been completed with a total installed capacity of 1. 2million kilowatts. The largest one in China, the Gezhouba Power Plant, has been completed on the Yangtze River with a total installed capacity of 2. 715million kilowatts. The largest water conservancy project of the world, the Three Gorges Project, is being built in the Three Gorges with a total installed capacity of 18.20 million kilowatts. In addition, Yichang has also over 400 middle-sized and small-sized hydropower plants with a total installed capacity of 540,000 kilowatts. All of these offer ample electricity for the development of the local and national economy and make Yichang worthy of being called "Hydroelectric City" at home and abroad.
