Longyan

Longyan is also called West Fujian for its geographical location in the west of Fujian. Bordering Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, the prefecture covers an area of 19, 000 square kilometers. According to the data released by the government, Longyan has a registered population of approximately 2.95million.
Longyan is a well-known Old Revolutionary Base Area in Fujian. In the1930s, many noted leaders of the Communist Party of China once worked here and fought for the bright future of China, including Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, and Chen Yi. Within its territory lie many revolutionary relics: Site of the Gutian Conference, Site of Fourth Red Army Commanders' Office, and the office where Chairman Mao composed his masterpiece A Single Spark Can Start a Prairie Fire. According to historical records, Longyan soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the revolutionary wars account for half of the martyrs of Fujian soldiers during the Revolutionary wars.
Owing to its favorable climate and mountainous regions, Longyan is celebrated for abundant forest resources, ranking third in forest coverage rate in Fujian. The famous Meihua Mountain Natural Reserve lies at the conjunction of Longyan City, Shanghang County and Liancheng County. The reserve is the home to the South China Tigers, spinulose tree ferns as well as many other rare animals and plants.
Longyan is also renowned for "Hometown of Hakka and Overseas Chinese". It is a beautiful land where Hakka people, normally referred to as Han people who speak Hakka dialect, have been residing for generations. According to statistics, Hakka people account for 80% of the inhabitants in Langyan. It is also the ancestral home for many Hakka people in Taiwan, including Wu Boxiong, Kuomintang Honorary President. The vernacular architecture of Hakka people, the circular Tulou, or Earth Building, won good reputation both at home and abroad. The defensive style of Tulou is an evidence of the hostility that Hakka people, once as migrants, aroused in the aboriginal inhabitants.
In recent years, Longyan has been a hot destination for tourists for its picturesque landscape, fascinating Hakka culture, and revolutionary cultural relics.
