Kumarajiva

Kumarajiva is one of the famous ancient translators in Chinese history. Kumarajiva( 344–413 AD) was a Buddhist monk, scholar, and translator from the Kingdom of Kucha which was called Qiuci in the history.
He was born in a wealthy family, his father was from an Indian noble family in Kuqa, and his mother was a Kuchean princess. When Kumarajiva was 7 years old, his mother went to temple to practice as a nun, he followed her into monastic life. He first studied teachings of the Sarvastivada schools, he grew up in centers of Hinayana Buddhism, later studied under Buddhasvāmin, and finally became a Mahayāna adherent, studying the Madhyamika doctrine of Nagarjuna.
In 383, Chinese forces Lvguang seized Kucha and carried Kumarajiva off to Liangzhou, China. He had stayed there for about 18 years to study Chinese and translate sutras from Sanskrit to Chinese. In 401 AD, Kumarajiva settled in Chang'an(Modern Xian) where he stayed the rest of his life.
Kumarajiva is mostly remembered for the prolific translation in disseminating Buddhist religious and philosophical ideas in China. He not only made available important texts that were previously unknown, but also did much to clarify Buddhist terminology and philosophical concepts.
