Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre(JSLC) in Brief is the Chinese space launch facility located in the Gobi desert, about 210km southeast of Jiuquan City. It was founded in 1958. It is currently the largest satellite launch center in China. It is also the place where China's two manned spacecrfts, Shenzhou V and Shenzhou VI, were sent into outer space.
The centre started as joint missile teast base known as Base 20(Shuang Cheng Tzu) in the late 1950s but later evovled into China's largest and most advanced space launch and tracking facility. The launch centre is a part of China Satellite Launch and Tracking Control General , and is directly led by the People's Liberation Army's General Armament Department.
JSLC is mainly used to launch manned spacecraft, scientific and recoverable satellite to the medium or low earth orbit at high inclinations on the CZ-2 and CZ-4 families of space launch vehicles.
At present JSLC has opened part of its ground to the public for the tourists from mainland China, including the launch pad where rockets were sent into outer space and the astronauts' training centre.
