Di (Dizi)

The Di, or Dizi 笛 or 笛子 in Chinese, is the horizontal bamboo flute as a traditional wind instrument in China.
The Di originated from Western Region, and then travelled to the hinterland of China along the modern Silk Road during the 2nd century BC from central Asia. Di is made of bamboo, the body has six finger-holes, one blow-hole, and an extra hole between them covered by a thin membrane of reed. Di is widely used many genres of Chinese music as a classical Chinese musical instrument. It is also very popular among the common Chinese people as it is easier to make and play than other music instruments.
In Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Kizil Grottoes in Kuqa on China Silk Road, there are plenty of fresco depicting the Apsaras playing Di while flying in the paradise standing above the Buddha.
