Chinese Festivals

There are many Chinese festivals in china, to celebrate, or to worship, or to commemorate somebody in the history, such as Chinese Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Middle Autumn Festival, etc.

Chinese Spring Festival
Or Chinese New Year, Chinese New Year is also called Chinese Spring Festival, because it happened in January or February generally, which is celebrated according to the lunar calendar that was the used by Chinese in the past, which differs from western calendar. The celebration for the Chinese Spring Festival can be different from north to south, west to east, but the general idea is the same, and the majority celebration are similar. For instance, people like to eat dumplings in northern China, and people like to eat Tangyuan,round dumplings in southern china.
Moreover most of people, during the spring festival will set fireworks, to drive evils off traditionally. Nowadays, it is strictly controled the fire so it's not possible to see the fire cracks in the big cities, you have to go to the countryside. The Spring Festival lasts fifteen days, and it is the time for the family to assemble together, so there will be millions of people moving back home during the festival

Lantern Festival
Lantern Festival is the last day of Chinese Spring Festival, the fifteenth of January for Chinese calendar. The Lantern Festival is a happy day for the people to set their lanterns in front of the houses in the past time, and people eat dumplings to celebrate the end of the spring festival.

Qingming Festival
Qingminf Festival is, the time for the people to clean the tombs of their ancestor, then worship the ancestor in the graveyard. Normally it happens on the fourth or fifth of April.

Dragon Boat Festival
Dragon Boat Festival is the fifth of May for Chinese lunar calendar, it was said that a scholar called Quyuan who dived into the Miluo river in Hubei province 2300 years ago, because he felt sad after his country was conquered by another state. In terms of his reputation people didn't want his body being eaten by the fishes. They threw the dumplings into the river to feed the fishes so that they would not eat the his body. From then on, this day became the festival for people to commemorate him, now people eat dumplings covered with leaves. It’s also a day to drive the insects off by drinking wine traditionally.

Middle Autumn Festival
Mid Autumn Of Festival happens on the fifteenth of August for Chinese lunar calendar. During the festival people would eat moon cakes. The story said during the late yuan dynasty, there was a uprising army that hid the message into the pancake on the fifteenth of August to take actions against the ruling of Mongol. From then on, Chinese have been eating moon cake to celebrate Middle Autumn Festival while enjoying the moon light of the full moon.

Festivals for Minorities in China
As there are many minorities in China, and each minority has their own festival, Uyghur have Kuerban festival, Tibetan have Xuedun Festival, Yi people have Huoba festival etc. Each festival has its own tradition, and people love to see the festivals celebration.
