The White Snake

Originated from Song Dynasty, which is one of the four major Chinese folklores. In the story, a millennium monster snake, Bai Suzhen (Bai Niangzi), fell in love with Xu Xian and married him, however, her identity was rumbled by a monk, named Fa Hai in Jinshan Temple. Xu Xian let Bai Niangzi drink realgar liquor as what Fa Hai told him, the original snake shape came out, Xu Xian was frightened to death either. Bai Niangzi stole immortal grasses in heaven to save Xu Xian, and fought against Fa Hai by magical powers with her maid, Xiao Qing (the Green Snake), after being defeated, she was incarcerated by Fai Hai underneath Leifeng Pagoda. Later on, the son of Bai Niangzi grown up, he rescued his mother out. The operas in various forms on the theme of this story enjoy great popularity.
