Weifeng Drum

Weifeng (Gallant) Drum, 威风锣鼓 in Chinese, is a kind of percussion ensemble which is popular in the Linfen area. It has been so named because the players exhibit various gallant gestures white playing their instruments. It is performed during celebrations of the lunarNew Year, good harvests, parades and other jubilant occasions.
It is said that this performing art began to appear during the times of the ancientemperors Yao and Shun and as existed for 4,000years.Every year on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, when the two princesses of Yao, Ehuang and Nyuying, who had both married emperor Shun, went to visit their parents, people at their husband's village would beat drums and gongs to see them off. When they retured, villagers of their home village did the same. Since then,the Weifeng Drum performance has become a custom, and most big villages have their own performing teams.
