In 1986, Chinese Compulsory Education Law was issued by Chinese government to guarantee the right for every Chinese kid to be educated for 9 years including elementary and secondary school. Since then, it is estimated 99% of the population has received universal nine-year education.

Here is the system of Chinese education.
Elementary school education 6 years
Secondary school education 3 years
High school education 3 years
College or University education 3 or 4 years
Higher education consists of vocational junior colleges, as well as universities and colleges that offer undergraduate or graduate programs. Minimum 3 years

Girls and boys are endowed equal right to be educated in country and city. Disables can be educated in different schools as well. Those who cannot afford the tuition fee of the higher education can apply loan from banks. Gao Kao, Higher Education Entrance Examination, is nearly the only way for the students to acquire higher education. Hence the competition of the Examination is so severe that many students have to work hard to acquire their opportunity to enter the best universities. However, the system has been criticized to limit the ability of students who only study for Examination. Reforms were carried out in the history for the Examination, and the government is still trying to make it better and equal for everyone.
